In this blog, I would like to share the story of Yvonne and Scott who had their intimate Edinburgh elopement ceremony right in the heart of the iconic capital of Scotland. Although held in the city centre, the ceremony felt private and secluded.
Can you elope in the city without having the feeling of being in the city? Yes you can! This Edinburgh elopement is a perfect example.
What is an elopement?
The word ‘elope’ means to run away secretly in order to get married. Gretna Green is a small town on the border of Scotland and England. Back in the 18th century it was the place where people would escaped from England in order to marry their loved one. Legal requirements in Scotland allowed people to marry each other for girls as young as 12 years old and boys as young as 14 without parental consent.
These days to elope doesn’t necessarily mean to escape to wed without anybody but your beloved partner. People elope in many different places and forms, on their own or with their family and friends.
Where to elope?
In Scotland you can get married anywhere you wish. This is truly amazing! All you need to do, is to agree the location of your civil ceremony with the registration authority. And, If you would like to have a religious or beliefs ceremony you’ll need to find an approved celebrant.
Can we elope in the city and keep it intimate?
Yes, you can! An Edinburgh elopement is a great way to tie the knot. Undeniably, Edinburgh has many beauty spots for your ceremony. Yvonne and Scott choose the Holyrood park for theirs. St Margaret’s Loch is at the foot of Edinburgh’s dramatic Arthur’s seat, one of the most iconic places in the city. The perfect location for an intimate Edinburgh elopement.
HOW TO MAKE EDINBURGH ELOPEMENT UNIQUE AND UNFORGETTABLE?
Everyone has a vision of how they want to get married. There are as many different ideas as there are people.
You might want to consider including some of the Celtic rituals in your Edinburgh elopement. Read about some of them below:
Hand-fasting is a symbolic unity ritual, binding two separate lives into one. The couple’s hands are tight together with a ribbon or a shawl.
A quaich, is known as the loving cup. A quaich ceremony is symbolic of sharing between the couple and seals the union of a couple just married.
YVONNE & SCOTT, EDINBURGH ELOPEMENT.
This intimate Edinburgh elopement took place back in December. Yvonne and Scott decided to tie the knot in a beautiful Holyrood Park, next to St Margaret’s lake. Beautiful and secluded place.
The Scottish weather was not in their favour. But you know what? Their warm hearts, love, happiness and celebration of their marital union showed that the weather would not dampen their spirit. They embraced the difficult weather conditions and made the most of their intimate Edinburgh elopement.
